I wandered the library this evening picking up random books, not judging by the covers mind you, trying to find some wholesome fun yet education books for the boys to read. (side note- boys were at home playing with the slip and slide which will always take precedent over going to the library ) I rummaged through the shelves finding great reads for the week, when out slid The Boy Who Ate America. I admit I scoffed at the title. " what type of book is this ?" I almost put it back when I remembered Trenton's love for geography and decided to get it despite the title.
Our family home meeting tonight was a bit different than most, due to the fact that the Scott family was over visiting and Rex was working on the bathroom. we still had our lesson and read books just the same. As I suspected, Trenton was thrilled about the America book. I started reading it thinking how silly it was, and what a non sense thing to read to children this "piece of literature" was. Right until the last 5 pages, I doubted the book. By the end of it I had goose bumps and now ordered it off Amazon.
This book teaches children and adults that acquiring things won't bring us lasting peace and happiness. Rather, the only way to be truly fulfilled is to feed our souls by feasting upon "the Word. "Nevada on Tuesday with gold-dollar jelly, Arizona, New Mexico snug in his belly. Now Texas took two days 'cause it was gigantic! Then `Bama and Georgia to reach the Atlantic. He sprinkled Virginia all over the coast, Then swallowed New York like a cinnamon toast. He had Boston with beans and Houston with ham, Salt Lake City with Jell-O and L. A. With Spam. He noshed on Seattle and chewed on Duluth, (after getting the Space Needle out of his tooth) He munched on the Redwoods like chips and some dip, Then washed it all down with the ol' Mississip . . . In a raft with his mom and nothing to do, He still felt so hungry, and GUILTY now, too! Water and water was all he could see. He still wasn't full. What else could there be?"Son, maybe your body's not hungry a bit, "She said, wiping part of Detroit from his lip. "We're all hungry, son, " she tried to imbue. "Your body needs food, but your soul needs some, too. " The scriptures repeatedly show that you have to go through the wilderness to get to the promised land. It was true for Lehi and his family, and it's true in our personal lives. Many people who had a rough beginning end up having a great finish.
I reccomend this book to any parent out there. One of the best I have EVER read!
